The “Stay Healthy” Shot

Hi friends! Hope you all enjoyed wonderful holiday festivities!

After two weeks of silence here, this post may seem underwhelming. I promise it’s one of the most helpful posts I’ll offer you.

Anyone else hate throwing up? For years, as soon as one of our kids got a stomach bug, I knew I would go down with them. It was inevitable, no matter how much Lysol spraying or hand washing I did.

Enter Apple Cider Vinegar. Years ago, I was away at a conference with a bunch of moms, and one by one they started throwing up. One mom mentioned that she took a shot of ACV every morning to stay healthy. When we got to my house, a friend and I both downed our own shots of it. It was terrible. I thought there was a good chance I would throw up just from that.

Healthy Shot

A bit after that, I stumbled upon a Pinterest post called “The Healthiest Shot You’ll Ever Take.” I highly recommend you hop over there and read about the health benefits of the various ingredients. I’m not a nutritionist, so I won’t pretend like I know what I’m talking about. What I do know is that I keep a bottle of it on hand, specifically in the fall and winter. As soon as throats start hurting, we take shots. And definitely when I hear so and so in someone’s class threw up, I insist everyone drink it. We were at a conference last week for work and just before leaving, I heard some good friends were sick. So I packed it up and brought it to the hotel with us. Everyone is still healthy!

Our kids definitely didn’t buy into it at first. But when they were all throwing up, and I did not, I think they realized I was onto something. My daughter was the last to try. Her brothers kindly tricked her into drinking it by telling her it was lemonade. That did not go well. There may have been tears because she drank it wholeheartedly as if it were lemonade. However, upon returning home after being out of town once, my youngest boys boasted that they had followed the recipe and made the “lemonade”. Apparently some illness was going around. #proudmoment They were very generous with the honey. 🙂

There are far more health benefits, though I’m selling it as anti-vomit. So do read that link above. Due to my primary motivation of protection, I don’t always use the collagen powder. Sometimes in my own cup, I’ll add a dash of ginger, turmeric and cayenne pepper.

The “Healthy Shot”

Course Drinks
Yield 10 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups filtered water (I got a Berkey filter a year ago when I had incessant migraines. Love it.)
  • 7 tbsp apple cider vinegar, preferably Bragg Organic Raw ACV
  • juice of one lemon, two if needed to make it more palatable
  • 5 tbsp collagen powder
  • 1 tbsp raw honey

Optional add-ins:

  • 1-2 tsp fresh or ground ginger, minced if fresh
  • 1 tsp fresh or ground turmeric, minced if fresh (it will turn everything orange, so be careful)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cayenne pepper
  • Himalayan salt

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a Mason jar or other container with a lid.
  2. Shake until the honey is dissolved. Alternately, you can mix it in a bowl and whisk until the honey dissolves.
  3. Store in a glass container in the refrigerator.
  4. Drink a shot glass worth once a day (1 1/2 ounces).
